One of the most difficult parts of getting started with cloth diapering is choosing a stylee. Among the array of cloth diaper options, pocket cloth diapers stand out for their simplicity, effectiveness, and versatility. In this blog post, we'll take a deep dive into the world of pocket cloth diapers, exploring what they are, how they work, their benefits, and essential tips for using them effectively.

Design and Structure:

  • Outer ShellOur diapers feature a PUL water-resistant outer layer, meaning leakage through the exterior fabric is an extremely low risk. PUL is a laminated fabric that prevents moisture from escaping. We are also now using Recycled PUL, making the most unsustainable part of cloth diapering a little more sustainable.
  • Inner LiningWe feature Athletic Wicking Jersey (AWJ) for the interior fabric that helps wick any moisture away from your little one's skin and into the absorbent insert. We have also gone a step further and extended the PUL liner into the tummy area of the diaper, ensuring that moisture can't easily transfer from the diaper to a shirt or further up the belly. All of this makes both parents and little ones happy!
  • PocketThe hallmark feature of pocket cloth diapers is a pocket opening between the outer shell and inner lining. This pocket allows for easy insertion and removal of absorbent inserts. This feature allows for customizable absorbency so that the same diapers can carry you all the way through your little ones diapering journey!

Absorbent Inserts:

  • Inserts come in various materials, including bamboo, hemp, and cotton, each offering different levels of absorbency and drying times.
  • You can customize the absorbency of the diaper by using one or more inserts, depending on their baby's needs and the duration of wear.
  • The pocket allows you to use pre-folds, pre-flats, bamboo cloth wipes, tea towels, or really any absorbent material as an insert. Pretty much whatever you have on hand can be stuffed into the pocket for a little extra absorbency!

Benefits:

  • Eco-Friendly: Pocket cloth diapers are reusable, significantly reducing the environmental impact of disposable diapers by minimizing landfill waste and resource consumption.
  • Cost-Effective: While the initial investment may be higher than disposable diapers, pocket cloth diapers save money in the long run since they can be reused multiple times.
  • Customizable Absorbency: Parents can adjust the absorbency of pocket cloth diapers by adding or removing inserts, making them suitable for daytime or overnight use.
  • Gentle on Baby's Skin: The breathable fabrics and absence of chemicals found in disposable diapers may reduce the risk of diaper rash and skin irritation.
  • Adorable Designs: Pocket cloth diapers come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and prints, allowing parents to express their style while diapering their little ones.

Basics of Care:

  • After use, the inserts are removed from the pocket, and both the shell and inserts are washed according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you want further information on wash and care of your diapers, our blog has some further resources.
  • It's essential to use a diaper-friendly detergent and avoid fabric softeners and bleach, which can affect absorbency and damage the diaper's materials.

Pocket cloth diapers offer a versatile, sustainable, and economical diapering solution for parents seeking an alternative to disposable diapers. With proper care and maintenance, pocket cloth diapers can provide comfort and convenience for both babies and caregivers while reducing their environmental footprint and the cost of diapering.
